Many people have heard of the Adobe programs Photoshop and Illustrator, but who knows what the differences are? People may argue that the two programs are basically similar, but their functions and capabilities are actually quite different. Adobe Illustrator takes the basic ideas presented in Photoshop and expands on them into an entirely new level.
Adobe Photoshop is a very popular program used by digital photographers around the world. The abundance of Photoshop tips and tutorials make this a very easy program to learn and to use. Photoshop can be used to take any existing image and give it a professional, polished looked. Borders can be added and pictures tweaked to look better than any digital camera could make possible. Almost anything you can imagine doing to a picture is capable when using adobe Photoshop.
Adobe illustrator is a different program entirely. Illustrator is a vector-based drawing program that allows you to create your own unique graphics. Adobe illustrator graphics can be used in print, online, in video, and even on your cell phone. Want to create your own background for your cell phone? It’s possible when you have adobe illustrator, and something that can’t be done with Photoshop alone.
Both programs are vastly talked about on the web. You will find a huge array of Tutorials For Adobe Photoshop and illustrator versions, as well as illustrator and Photoshop tips on blogs. Adobe Illustrator offers a huge number of templates to get you started, or you can design your own ideas from scratch using a number of different drawing tools. With Photoshop you can create unique graphics, but they all originate from an existing image and the tools to modify it are limited in comparison to Illustrator. It is seldom that you will find large amounts of information on drawing and vector art tools. But to make your digital images perfect, Photoshop is the program for you with plenty of information available. With the abundance of info on the subject, you won’t be able to stop form touching up every photo you take.
Adobe Illustrator is a different program. Whereas Photoshop adds a new look to an existing image, Illustrator can create a brand new unique image. The software is relatively easy and with the large number of tips and tutorials to be found online, Illustrator is extremely popular.
There’s no reason you cannot work with both adobe Photoshop and adobe illustrator to create brand new images or polish existing ones. The two programs have some basic, shared components, so by mastering one you will already have a working knowledge of using the other. To make your images as stunning as possible or to create graphics that no one else has seen before, you can use both adobe Photoshop and illustrator. There is no reason to pick between the two and use only one program if you have uses for both. Because the two programs and their uses are so different, it’s probably preferable to use both adobe programs for your digital photography and image creations.

The color modes and color models of digital imaging seem to be a mystery to many first timers learning How To Use Photoshop. Many are so intimidated by the various color modes that they simply ignore the issue because they do not understand the impact color modes can have on the final printed image.
The color modes establish the color model that should be applied to display and print digital pictures. Understanding color modes and models and how to utilize them in Photoshop is a must for those who are serious about professional quality digital imaging. Learn what color modes will work best for different application to optimize results. Many good Photoshop tutorials and training guides are available to instruct on when and how to use the various Photoshop color modes for achieving the best image depending on your particular project.
Before you even begin working with the color modes in Photoshop it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of what the color modes are and why there actually are different models available.
To start with, digital images are displayed using several different color modes. This Photoshop tutorial highlights on the basic color modes you will come upon while working on your digital images.
RGB
RGB stands for Red Green and Blue. Colors in RGB color mode are generated using a combination of these three primary colors. You basically have three color channels to work with in RGB mode with the ability to adjust the intensity of each channel to produce different degrees of colors. Combine all three of the colors to create white.
CMYK
CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. RGB produces colors by mixing them together, while CMYK in effect creates color by subtracting varying degrees of each color. For example, to produce white, all colors would be reduced to zero.
You will see huge improvements in your digital imaging once you understand and are familiar with color modes. One important tip is that printers use CMYK color while monitors use RGB. This can result in there sometimes being a difference in what you see on your PC monitor and what is printed on paper. You can overcome this by installing software that will calibrate your monitor colors to that of your printer. By doing this, what you see on your monitor will be an accurate depiction of what your printer will produce.

Adobe Photoshop is today’s market leader when it comes to photo editing software programs. Inside Photoshop are a variety of tools that help you create images such as logos, banners, and buttons from scratch as well as edit digital photographs. You can also download photos, scanned artwork, or Internet icons and use Photoshop to edit them to suit your needs.
The incredible breadth of Photoshop’s functions can be daunting, especially if you are a beginner to graphic creation or photo editing; however, after spending a bit of time reading the instruction manual, even someone who is new to photo editing should be able to take advantage of the features available in Photoshop. If you find the book difficult to follow you can also find video tutorials which can guide you through any part of Photoshop.
There are four components of Photoshop’s desktop. These four areas are the main tools used to create and edit images. These tools are:- Menu Bar, Drawing Canvas, Toolbox & Palettes.
I want to start with the most familiar item first. At the top of the screen is the Menu Bar which looks like the menu bar in most other applications. Each menu item is almost self explanatory; for example, if you want to do anything with the “file” you are working on you will find it under “File.” If you want to manipulate anything on the screen you should find it under “Edit” or “Tools.” Under the menu items you will find all the tools in which to create or manipulate your items.
The Drawing Canvas is the next part of Photoshop that you want to become familiar with. The drawing canvas is the large white area in the middle of the screen where you can create or edit your images. Here you can also limit or specify the size of your image and you will want to set the size of your drawing canvas to match your projects requirements. The drawing canvas title bar will tell you the name of your image once you have saved it, as well as the magnification level at which you are viewing your screen and what workspace mode you are in. You can have an unlimited number of drawing canvases open at one time and to set them to all different sizes.
The Toolbox is your main arsenal of tools which will allow you to create and edit your images in Photoshop. The toolbox contains twenty different tools that allow you to draw and modify images on your drawing canvas. When you hold your mouse over each item and a “tooltip” will appear telling you the name of the tool itself. You might notice a small triangle at the bottom of the tool icon. If you can press and hold your mouse over the tool a flyout menu will appear showing any hidden tools. With these tools you can create shapes, draw lines, fill in colors, erase images, select parts of an image, and so much more. When you select the different tools Photoshop changes the shape of your mouse pointer with the idea that you will remember what tool you are currently using.
The last component of Photoshop that you will need to be familiar with is the dock which contain certain panels. When you open the program five panels will appear on your screen. These default panels are: information, brushes, layers, command, and color. More panels are found in the Windows menu on the menu bar. These panels are what give Photoshop its versatility. Each panel modifies the properties of the tools in the toolbox. For example, the brushes panel allows you to change the thickness of line your brush draws. Each panel contains its own features and it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with each panel and their functions. You will also want to look at the menu’s for each of the panels which are available at the top right of the panel.
Once you are comfortable with the basic layout of Photoshop you should get to know all the tools in your toolbox. The best way to do this is open a new drawing canvas select each tool and begin to play and see what each one does. If you have the instruction manual in front of you you will be able to read about each of the tools properties and what exactly it does. Once you have become comfortable with the basics of the program you can begin to work on the more advanced features.
